Kuranda

The Kuranda village is a great place to wander around, there are markets and shops with all sorts of cute and quirky things to see. The playground in the park is popular with kids of all ages and a great place for a family picnic and a play.

Barron Falls Boardwalk

This is an easy, pram friendly walk. The boardwalk takes you through all levels of the rainforest with signs along the way explaining what you are seeing as you go. You’re rewarded at the end with a beautiful view of the spectacular Barron Falls.

Halloran's Hill

Halloran’s Hill in Atherton is a great place to take the family! There are fabulous views of the Cairns Highlands, barbeques, a children’s playground and a rainforest walk where you might see small wallaby-like creatures known as pademelons!

Lake Tinaroo

The Lake Tinaroo day use area features two excellent children’s playgrounds and a long pram-friendly path for strolling along the lakefront, you can also swim here or hire canoes and take the kids for a paddle.

Country Markets

A range of markets are on every weekend in this region. Each market is different with a large variety of home grown produce, and locally made products such as clothing and arts and crafts to be found at each. The most popular is the colourful Yungaburra markets, held on the fourth Saturday of every month.

The Curtain Fig Tree

This amazing natural wonder is thought to be more than one hundred years old, it has survived numerous cyclones and is definitely worth visiting while you're in the Cairns Highlands region. There is a boardwalk here making pram access easy and as its a very short walk its suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. Follow the signs from Yungaburra.

Lake Barrine & Lake Eacham 

Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham are both volcanic craters which have been dormant for thousands of years. There are picnic spots and walking trails at both lakes and a host of interesting birds and wildlife to see. Lake Barrine also has an excellent lake cruise and tea house.

Ravenshoe

Ravenshoe's Wind Farm at Windy Hill is an amazing sight as you approach the township. You can take a walk around the viewing area and see these gigantic windmills in action. This is Queensland's largest wind farm and the major source of power for the region, with 20 windmills supplying enough power for 3500 homes.

The waterfall circuit

Many families enjoy exploring the spectacular waterfalls region of the Cairns Highlands. Within easy driving distance of Millaa Millaa Falls, pictured left, you can visit both Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls. There are short rainforest walks at each of the falls which young children will enjoy. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife because tree kangaroos are often spotted in the trees around here and platypus can sometimes be seen swimming in the creeks here too!
