Hogs Breath Café  

Hogs Breath Café is a highly recommended family dining experience. The kids’ meals are great and there’s something for everyone here. Voted 2008 Best Steak Restaurant by the people of Cairns, Hogs Breath is a must for steak lovers!

If steak’s not really your thing it’s ok as they have a very comprehensive menu which includes chicken, fish, amazing salads and some great vegetarian options too.

They have an extensive kids menu which starts at $8.95 and includes a drink and ice cream. There’s also a range of healthy extras such as fresh vegetables or a house salad which can be added for just $3.95. Mashed potato for babies is available too.

For kids there is so much to look at, the walls are covered in the most amazing paraphernalia from china wall hangings to old posters, licence plates and other interesting collectible bits and pieces. There are activity sheets and colours provided for young children as well as large screen TVs for the older kids. However you never need to wait long here and most people are in and out within an hour making it ideal for families.

Hogs Breath is right in the city, at the Myer End of Spence St. Its located 4 blocks back from the esplanade and parking is easier here.

Fasta Pasta

Fresh, fun and very, very fast! Fasta Pasta is a winner for families who need to get in and out quickly. The menu is predominantly pasta but they also do great pizzas, steak, chicken and seafood. The food is always hot, fresh and tasty and their prices are very affordable ranging from $8.90 to $16.90. Kids meals are good value too, priced at $7.90, and include a gelati cone and a small soft drink.

Breads are brought out while you wait for your meals to arrive and a few free kids’ magazines are available too but the service is so prompt here that you never really have to wait very long. Families with young children are well catered for with high chairs, pram access and a baby change room as well.

At the end of a busy day exploring Cairns and the surrounding regions Fasta Pasta is a great option if you’re looking for something quick and affordable.

Verdi’s Licensed Italian Restaurant

Verdi’s is a great place to take children for dinner. Their menu is very reasonably priced and the food is delicious. Verdi’s is a popular restaurant with the locals and is a family run business which has been operating in Cairns since 1986 offering a selection of steak, seafood, wood-fired pizza and pasta. They have a great wine list too featuring a number of excellent Australian wines.

They are open for lunch and dinner and always have great deals available making them very affordable for families. Early bird dining is available Monday to Friday with a 20% discount for meals ordered by 6:30pm.

The staff are friendly and really make families feel welcome. There are colouring sheets and crayons provided for children too, making it easy for parents to relax while the meals are being prepared. The service is excellent with very little waiting time, such a crucial factor when dining with younger children! The kids menu is well priced too and ranges from $6.00 - $8.50, a number of the choices also include a fresh salad.

Lake Barrine Teahouse  

Lake Barrine Teahouse is an ideal place for families. The outlook across the lake is tranquil and serene with the blues and greens of the lake and forest creating a beautiful and calming combination where you can’t help but sit back relax and smile.

The atmosphere within the teahouse compliments this perfectly with a very friendly and welcoming feel, after all they have been serving their award winning Devonshire Tea here for almost 100 years!

They are very family-friendly too. The business has been with the Curry family since 1928 and several generations of children have grown up right here by the lake. There is a small play area inside the teahouse so parents can enjoy a leisurely lunch there is also a baby change room and pram access from the middle car park.

The children’s lunch menu is reasonably priced at just $7.00 and includes the choice of a cheeseburger, hot dog or toasted ham and cheese sandwich as well as a popper or a can of drink.

Nick's Swiss Italian Restaurant

The award winning Nick’s Restaurant in Yungaburra is legendary for its fun and entertaining atmosphere and don’t be surprised if Nick breaks out his accordion spontaneously too as there is always something to celebrate here. Saturday nights are especially known for festive themed nights with a range of annual events such as the Mayfest, Swiss National Day Celebration, Italian nights, Christmas in July, Oktoberfest and more held regularly. Nick's has remarkably won Queensland Restaurant and Caterer's association's 'best themed and entertainment restaurant' award for the last 7 consecutive years! His cuisine is regularly awarded too with Nick's taking out the titles of 'Overall Winner', 'Best Licensed Restaurant' and 'Best European Restaurant' as well.

Meals are reasonably priced with adult mains ranging from $13.50 through to $38.00 and children’s meals from $7.50. Babies are welcome with highchairs, baby change facilities and pram access. As well as plenty of activities for older kids too including puzzles, games, art sets and activity sheets.

A good time can be had by all at Nick's restaurant, a great choice for a really fun night out as a family.

Tides Restaurant

Tides Restaurant in Innisfail is great for families, they have a comprehensive menu with seafood, steaks, chicken, pasta and vegetarian options all available. Kids are really well looked after here too with a great kids menu, colouring activity and highchairs available. Tides is located on Fitzgerald Esplanade overlooking the beautiful Johnstone River in Innisfail.

Roscoe's Restaurant

Innisfail's Roscoe's restaurant is popular with the locals. They do take-away, al-a-carte and are famous for their all you can eat seafood buffet. For families the buffet represents great value for money as kids under 12 pay their age!

The Beach Shack

The Beach Shack in Port Douglas is a fun place to go, the atmosphere is great, the outdoor dining area feels like the beach and even has sand and most importantly the meals are superb. Prices are affordable and adult mains range from $15.50 through to $27.00.

Families are made to feel very welcome, they have a great kids menu and supply colours and activity sheets for kids while they wait too. Make sure you get there early though as its a popular spot on a busy night and we had to wait quite some time for our meals to come out.
